I often copy my idols Bent Larsen's or Aron Nimzowitsch's openings. It is much more fun than to follow eg. the engines best opening choises (= modern theory).
learning openings by studying your favourite GM game collections
no it's a terrible idea, you don't have access to their opening files and you don't have their experience so it will be a failure. I'm a fan of Fischer but after the theory has ended and I'm on my own, I can't play the KID as well was him, it's not my opening and I'm not Bobby Fischer (yet)
For Tal, analyzing whole games is worth the effort but copying opening repertoire is not. He played a bit of everything and his handling of the openings was quite academic, he did not go for early aggressions but classically developed pieces (before sacking them in the middlegame you need to get them out first).
for example, if Tal is your favourite GM, does it make sence to 'copy' their opening repetore by studying their game collections like for example my life and games? whats the best way to study openings for intermidiate players?
