Study Reti's games. He used hypermodern openings with the white and the black pieces frequently.
Looking for help with the French
1 e4 b6 is an opening for black that pops up from time to time in strong players games. but really once you reach the super gm level it never happens so it's probably best to stick to the french...1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5 and against 1 d4 play e6 and you will transponse to french or play semi tarrasch.

The Alekhine's Defense springs to mind. It is a defense against 1. e4, and dares white to get a big center so that it may be attacked. My rating soared once I learned these systems, and I love them bigtime. :)
Here are quite a few games to look over. You'll notice that black simply refuses to post pawns in the center much of the time.

Hi guys! I'm new to the fourms but love playing chess. I was looking for some help on what I guess is a variation of the french while playing black.
Specifically instead of 1. e4 e6 2. d4(or d3) d5
is there a book variation that plays 1. e4 e6 2. d4 b6 which leads to a queenside fianchetto for black?
Any help would be great. I am also very interested in hypermodern openings for black. If anyone can point me in that direction, thanks.
