You claim the rook is better....but it's trapped behind a pawn....

How so? And does a strong pawn defense not make it a harder piece to attack?

I really don't why U continue.. once d5 is played, U'r on defense for the rest of the game Undecided

Happy Easter my ol' buddy Wink

there is weird and then there is crazy.  i have successfully experimented with 1.d4 nc6 2.d5 nb8 when i feel like avoiding the labyrinth of complications that is ne5, despite looking insane the montevideo retreat is actually ok, as black just pircs/KID the position, but the d5 push gives black more flexibility on what formation to use after your standard d6-nf6-g6-bg7-0-0.

this 1.nc6 2.rb8 is just a bad joke.

On analysis it says the rook move is an inaccuracy. The best move was d5

That is why there is a d5 variation as displayed in the second game to appease those who are torn between a fresh perspective of chess and following the books meekly. I would still recommend the rook move to any who are braver.

What's the lesson learned here?

sadkid2008

The lesson learned is that this is the great opening that will fuel young minds to think well and that all who blaspheme about it are sheep

1.e4 nc6 2.d4 d5 is a great defense, and it is prob no worse than the caro-kahn.

-the exd5 line at best for white leads to an endgame where black faces the bishop pair, but its quite playable. nimzowitsch has a tarrasch scalp with that ending with it so you can win with it even at a high level.

-the e5 line leads to positions resembling french and caro kahn. black has a blocked c-pawn but he will play bf5, e6 and my way of playing it is nge7 and f6 (early f6 after nge7 is actually ok, if black goes gxf6 back, he will go qd7 0-0-0 and prepare e5 or go rg8 and/or h5

-3.nc3 and black can play the weird but sound french line 3...e6 but i prefer dxe4! 4.d5 nb8!? (instead of ne5 the old main line) 5.nxe4 c6 and black has almost equalized already. if 5.f3!? black can accept, or decline with 5...e6 or e5.

too bad most players decline 2.d4 in favor of 2.nf3 or even 2.nc3

  Cool down Mars midget.

That is no way to speak to me. At four feet and six inches, I tower over most other martians.

@sadkid2008

The rook isn't even useful there until move 15 (first example). You waste an opportunity to castle queenside over a move that does basically nothing. Then you sac the rook for a bishop (which is the logical thing to do, that rook isn't helping you).

A sac stands for sacrifice - which means that the exchanging was for a purpose. That purpose was greater than the rook, so the move is justified. And you argue that the rook is not immediately useful- well, of course. Moving a pawn in the center follows the opening principles, but does not immediately win you the game. The long term benefits of queenside pressure are what make the rook move great

"Great".

What the... I CHALLENGE YOU... AGAIN! Are you SCARED to face me because you know it's bad?

darkunorthodox88

lol people still taking this seriously. 1.e4 nc6 2.d4 rb8??! 3.d5 is just an awful version of the mikenas defense. you are a tempo down in a defense where tempo's are crucial to stay afloat and to add insult to injury, you blocked the potential nb8 which is fine after d5. (the montevideo retreat which normally leads to pirc/KID positions where white is on d5 instead of d4)

I cha;;enge you to a daily match, dodo.

I'm not DUMB, sir. You are dumb for creating this opening. It simply WASTES a tempo while giving white a HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE center!
