Does white press a lot with e4 d4 and f4 to restrict black's space?

Yes, 4.f4 is a book move. And I think you’re probably right; White wants to cramp Black’s space, and get control of the center. But it’s as if Black relishes this with this opening! Playing moves like 4. ... a6 in response (another book move) almost seems like Black doesn’t know what he’s doing!(but he does). I think there’s a psychological component to the opening I must like. Black is sitting back, patiently building his defenses while waiting for White to get impatient.
I took the test. I had to answer many questions hypothetically because I don’t play in tournaments. Chess is just a hobby for me; not too serious. The test said Prodigy.
Regarding your 2nd question, all I can say is find a chess games database and play through a few mainlines. I find it interesting as Black because I’m not directly challenging White in the opening. I’m setting up a defensive posture. Because of that, White may get aggressive too early.
I like to respond to 1.d4 with 1. ... g6.
I know this is an oversimplification, but when playing this it seems the overall strategy for Black is to patiently build a solid defensive position, while White builds control of the center. It often seems like a waiting game from Black’s POV, waiting for White to become impatient and make a mistake that Black can capitalize on.
Here’s a standard first few moves:
What are your thoughts as White at this point? Thanks for your time 🙂
