There are many Hypermodern systems that are good. The KID, KIA, and Pirc Defense are a few that immediately come to mind.

Modern Defense is pretty good, actually. Borg Defense, on the other hand, is very dubious, to say the least.

The modern defense often leads to compressed positions containing a lot of potential energy. Sometimes white overextends and his position collapses quickly and sometimes white just steamrolls black. I played it long ago, inspired by the games of Duncan Suttles, and had both happen unpredictably. After a while I switched for a nice, 'calm' Sicilian where I had some idea what was going on. --all just my own experience of course!

Claim: Hypermodern defenses suck.
Translation: I suck at playing hypermodern defenses.
This guy played a modern like defence against me as black. I didn’t see it at first but his moves seem so natural and easily defended against my attack. Have played a few games with his modern like variation which is easier to play, the moves just flow but it’s a tad slow for my liking.
Here’s a game using that black system that’s like the modern, after I saw how he plays it. It’s kinda fun don’t know what it’s called, my king feels super safe at least.
Modern Defence is playable, but hard to play correctly.
Even Borg Defence is playable. British Championship, white was a Grandmaster.

Those kinds of "indian" setups for black are hyper-modern and usually are positional rather than playing for tricks.
