Modern Defense

Black is left with a better position regardless of the three undeveloped pieces

personally i don't think that is a good way to play a modern defence. as estragon said it has to be bad to play e5 at that point. white replies d5 and your key diagonal is blocked, and then what have you got?

furthermore, this is a Pirc, not a Modern.

its actually worse for white to play d5 and just saying my key diagonal and my strong bishop is BLACK not white, then you would send the pawns of the king side

lol I've been using this opening ever since I've joined chess so it's not really "smart" to try and fool me

Be that as it may, mate, you've been using the Pirc, not the Modern.

No shame in that, though.  Fine defense, the Pirc.

Check out the ReViewing Chess book series: http://bit.ly/reviewingchess. Go through the games and watch how the pawns move. There are several volumes on the Mondern. Wink

You should buy an ad if you want to advertise your "books".

Talking about the Modern, I wanted to post a quick mini (not a checkmate - my opponent just ran out of time) against the Modern.  My reason for posting this game is my opponent's computer-like ...e5 in the opening.  He immediately sets the mood for a type of King's Indian style game, but he leaves his d-pawn exposed.  Any ideas or suggestions?  I really like White's handling of these positions (not because I am White, but the way I was able to control the board and claim space was something I really liked - it felt natural).

what woud you have done had white played 12. BxN?

I was White here...I imagine Bxn fxB NxB RxB 0-0?

Conzipe, thanks for that pointer.  I simply liked to keep the tension - more in my style...rather than give my opponent a more open, tactical game. But I will take your suggestion to heart.

I guess what I am trying to say is that the board doesn't open quickly with the pushing of the pawn. Sure, this isn't real tension, as after d5, the tension is gone.  However, there is another form of tension building, in the two pawn chains...mine with a spearhead at d5, shooting towards the queenside, and his towards the kingside.

But you make a point about the Maroczy structure, which is a positional structure by nature.  I may look at that idea here.  I just don't want to get into a tactical bloodfeast really.

Scandinavian Defense is in honor of Bent Larsen, correct?
