"Chess is mostly about taking space, preferably center. So; this first move 1.g3?! foreign for basic chess rules. "
1 g3 and 2 Bg2 is the only way to develop Bf1 in such a way that it controls 2 central squares: e4 and d5.
1 g3 and 2 Bg2 takes only 2 moves. 1 e4, 2 Bc4 usually takes 3 Bb3, 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Ba4 often needs Bb3 and Bc2.
