You will see with time that it will only work until some level, then you have to change anyway. So just pick one. It wont be for life anyway. I have played french aswell, but also pirc, scicillian, e5, scandinavian, you name it. So if french is working, then stay with it until it does not. Right now I am playing 1.. d6, and as of why that has the lowest winscore for black is because I play it against stronger opponents 2000-2400 while the others I played against 1000-1999. Try out the French Defense, it's about the most closed the center get's in a 1. e4 opening. Often people think black is limited to playing on the queen-side in the French, but that is not true, almost nine times out of ten I windup playing on the king-side, with pawn breaks such as f6, which usually opens the f-file for attacks.
