Most "Creative" 1.d4 Defense

Avatar of southpawsam

Hello Chess Fans

Playing as Black against 1.d4 is a very boring and uncreative task, as most every possible move has been deeply studied in theory.  They're very few "creative" 1.d4 defenses left to play.

So what do you use to defend against 1.d4, to keep the game off the beaten path??  I like to play the Dutch, because that isn't too "booked up".  Leave a note on what you play.   Like the Chigorin, Budapest Gambit, or maybe your own invention.  Whatever the opening, leave a note.

I need some ideas,soon.

1.P-Q4 Kt-KB3 2.P-QB4 Kt-QB3 is my favorite defense.

 I suppose in modern notarion this would be 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 Nc6

Is that correct?

I think this may already be made, but i was thinking maybe 1. d4 d5 2. c4 c5?!

Its copying the Boungcloud Fosterbeer Counter-Gambit (below)

(1. e4 e5 2. Ke2?! f5 3. f4?!)

There are 20 answers to d4; you may be as creative as options allow.

1.P-Q4 P-Q3 2.P-QB3 K-Q2!! is the Bongcloud Counterattack.  I have played a few games in this line.

The Benko Gambit! or the Tarrasch defence (Schaa Henning Gambit)!

Modern notation:

1. d4 d6 2. c4 Kd2!!

I still like the Bongcloud Fosterbeer Counter-Gambit better than the Bongcloud Counterattack.

Does anyone know if the opening 1. d4 d5 2. c4 c5?! has been named yet?

I think it's exagerating a bit to call a one move response a 'defenseUndecided, don't you?

So while 1. ... d5 doesn't seem like what you're looking for, how about after they play 2.c4, you play 2. ... e5!? (Albin's Counter-Gambit).

P.S.  Check it out in Game Explorer, but don't be thrown by the %'s you see early on. Play through a little further and see how much black you start to see in those bar graphs!

I have been playing the Nimzo-QID combo platter lately, and have been really enjoying it. I used to play the Dutch, but found it too aggressive... its pretty much (at least in the hands of a poor player like myself) a one shot deal. You launch the kingside attack... and if you get mate you win. If they stop you, you lose.

How about this one?

What about 1....e6, which can lead to the French, or to the interesting, relatively uncommon but solid English defense? Or of course to several Indian variants.

That's the symmetrical QGD, or "Austrian defense"

What d4 opening ?

There are dozens Colle, London, stonewall, Torre, Aleppo Gambit, Veresov, Blackmar Diemer Catalan etc etc

I love the Queen's Gambit, but would respond with 2.e4 after 1...d6 and avoid the Rat Defense altogether.

I would suggest going Dutch as well. Smile There's no transposition for 1...f5.  Black compromises his king saftey for an unbalanced pawn structure and a fighting game. Know it well and you will make most of the 1.d4 players uncomfortable, and some even miserable.

1...d6 is my preferred move, as it has many transpositional qualities.  The common follow up to 1. d4 d6 2. e4 is of course 2...Nf6 and not 2...e5, this usually leads to a Pirc.  My guess is that most 1. d4 players will attempt to steer the game towards a KID with 2. c4 to avoid having to be familiar with both KID and Pirc/Philidor theory.

d4 players know not to play 2.c4 after ...d6, as the endgame variation scores very well for black.

Most won't be as adverse to the Modern/Pirc as you say, but those that are will simply continue 2.e4 3.f3 4.c4, transposing to a Saemisch KID, or else at least a c4 modern of some sort.

Allow me to translate to abate confusion:

First Move of the White: The Pawn of the Queen hereby advances two Squares and thus completes the initial Move of Business.

First Move of the Black: The Knight of the King's Division henceforth jumps forward yet diagonally as well towards the Centre of the Battle Plank and thereby commences the first Move of the Owner of the Black Regiment.

Second Move of the White: The Pawn of the Bishop of the Queen Division shall advance two Movements of Direction as well thus actualizing the Second Move of War.

Second Move of the Black: The Knight of the Queen's Division shall mirror its Cavalry Counterpart with a forward yet diagonal yet central Jump and whereby not neglects the consummation of the Second Move of Contention.
