No. 4. c3 and you lose a piece.

3. ..Ne5 is better but if you play that you might as well start with Nc6. the c-pawn is misplaced on c5, so later on you can't bring out your dark-squared bishop.

No, as Alphastar pointed out you simply lose. If you don't want to play the mainline Smith-Morra, you could try playing 1. e4 c5 2. d4 cxd4 3. c3 Nf6. You get a reasonable position, and maybe take them out of book.

Crafty even prefers 5. Na3. So there are 3 ways white can gain the piece.
