If your white Bc4 is playable but not the best move, 3.Nxe5 is best
My own common oppening

I don't see any glaring weaknesses, but I would have played 3. ...Nxe4 instead.
However, I find 4. ...Ng4 pretty strong.

I think he's playing Black.
After 3. Nxe5, Black usually gets the pawn back via 3. ...d6 4. Nf3 Nxe4

well then if he's playing black then 3...Nxe4 is best, but I would play 3...Nc6 transposing in to the two knights defense

Black IS just a mirror, normally 2....Nc6 would be played, which would require Nc3 to protect the e4 pawn.

Even though 2. ...Nc6 is the most common move, there is nothing wrong with 2. ...Nf6 (Petroff Defense). I've seen all of the top players in the world employ it before.

2... Nc6 doesn't attack the e pawn so white doesn't need to defend it

Absolutely, but as a beginner, I am just suggesting the main lines to play so that he has a sturdy base from which to build.
He says himself that he is merely mirroring moves and I think he will come across the main line more often than the Russian game.

Dang, I should have read more into that. Nice catch.

True, but the point of 2. ...Nc6 is definitely not to attack e4, but to protect e5.

Yeah, apologies, getting ahead on myself on that one alright as I am expecting Nf6.
