My Pet Opening - No Tricks (Italian Game with 3... Nf6)

Sort:
digispin

As Black: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5

Sometimes, I feel White thinks that I'll fall for the Fried Liver and they'll put their guard down.  In the past, I've met 5. exd5 with 5... Na5.  But I now I exclusively play 5... b5. It's played about 10% of the time according the the database.  The game will open up quickly.

The most common reply is 6. Bxb5 to grab the pawn, then 6... Qxd5 equalizes.  The only move for White is 6. Bf1, a retreat, which is not intuitive (at my level) and has never been played against me.

Anything to steer away from the Giuoco Piano.  If White plays 4. d3, then oh well.

aha, the ulevsted (I don't think I spelled it right) variation of the two knights defense.

When magnus carlsen age 10 played this against me I was so surprised I blundered my bishop. (as white)
