Can one explain, why Sicilian is a "defence"? I mean 1...e5 is not a defence, merely a goup of openings - Italian game, Spanish game, Russian game, Vienna game etc. depending on next couple of moves.

Sicilian seems to be as much variation heavy, yet these are all variations of a defence rather then seperate openings.

Technically, White has the advantage of the first move and can attack, so that is why it is called "Attack" in most variations. Against White's first move, Black must play a move against white's "attack", so it is called a "defence".

Just my 2 cents; hope this helps!

Also all the openings named defenses don't to the other pawns like d4 d5 or e4 and e5
