Name that Defense

Can anyone tell me the name of the defense shown in the diagram?  I enjoy using it but would like to do some actual studying on the defense.  I'm not sure if it works because it is a good counter to white's third move or because players aren't used to it.  Any help is appreciated.

It's because people don't know it. It's actually sucky.

Dude I had the exact same opening trivia idea when I first came to this site. Look at my blog and check the date.  But just like you should I quickly dismissed the idea since It serves no purpose what so ever.

one main drawback (by no means the only one) for black is that after 4. dxe5 dxe5 5. Qxd8+ Kxd8, black's king is unable to castle and is on an open file, not to mention that the pawn on e5 hangs.

The idea is not absurd and obtaining an advantage as W not so easy. But at the end of the day B is probably in trouble with best play. It's not as bad as some posters have suggested, since it has a certain logic behind, and W needs to aggressively before B obtains a very strong centre. It's certainly playable against under-2000 opposition. A relatively recent book on this opening(a bit optimistic regarding B chances) is "The dynamic philidor counter gambit" by J.West.

I think it is important to study this idea, even if you think it is sucky, for a few reasons.

#1 - it is the foundation for one of the oldest opening systems developed, by one of chess history's most brilliant players, Philidor.  If you do study the lines, at least maybe you can appreciate a line that at one point was a terror from the Black side for White to face!

#2 - Against an opponent who is not aware of White's tactical resources, Black can very quickly take control of the center.

#3 - At the very least, it would be good to study it at least briefly, to find a suitable reply against it, if you were playing the White pieces.  As mentioned above, if you don't know the weaknesses of this setup, it can surely be a strong defense for Black.
