Hello Guys,

I have been playing chess for around 2 years and I want to play KID.

Can someone please share basic ideas for Black in Kings Indian? How to play diffident variations, maybe few sample games wherein Black won the game..?

Nb3d2

there are many sub-variation for K.I.D. openning. There's saemisch and the classical.   Both are exciting and can lead to tactical games.

As black, you play the KID similar to  Pirc System  or Sicilian Dragon.

Sac4win

Thanks.

Can you post sample variations; it would be much helpful.

Uhm, the KID is NOTHING like the Pirc or Dragon.  You finachetto the King's Bishop.  That's all that's the Same.

The Pirc and the Dragon are typically Queenside Attacks for Black.

The King's Indian, with the exceptions of the Four Pawns Attack and the Saemisch, typically involves a Kingside Pawn Storm for Black, especially the Classical Variation.

If you are at least 1800, I would recommend avoiding the King's Indian Defense.  It's highly theoretical with very little room for error.  You make an inferior move in the Queen's Gambit Declined, you still have a fighting chance to survive.  You make an inferior move in the King's Indian, you're likely dead!

Here is a blog post that gives some basic information as well as some games using the opening.

How about posting nice, thematic Grandmaster games from the KID?

I enjoy playing the KID, and I learned from simply watching youtube videos.  The Chess Website has some easy to follow examples.

A GM once told me not to play it until I was IM. I decided I didn't want to abstain from playing it, so I ignored his advice. The problem is that White gets a huge space advantage. Look at Kasparov and Gufeld games. I will post links later...

Also, it depends on whether you are focused on improving your rating (a waste of time, in my opinion) or improving your understanding of chess.

Playing the King's Indian Defense and getting your ass handed to you might teach you a lot.

I've found the KID to be a nice tool. Mainly because it seems that because of the stifling advice of higher rated players to NOT try the KID if you are not highly rated, many people I play against are not sure how to play against it.

I'm quite happy now when someone plays 1. d4.

Thanks guys!

@Kleelof...can we play few friendly practice matches on KID..? Please send me the challenge .

+ThrillerFan  is correct,  usually the attack is opposite wings, with K-side pawn storm for black, while white will crush the Q-side of black and try to win the game by defending correctly his K at g1.

Here's one of my favourite KID Classical,  played by no other than Garry Kasparov.

They say it is difficult because of this very popular line.  Appeared in many recent tournaments played by super GM's.  GM's claimed that engines can be crushed if you are black in the above variation, because engines won't feel the danger of their K-side.

Thanks!

Okay.

Starting Out: The King's Indian Defense by Gallagher is a good starting point. But one book I really recommend is The King's Indian Defense: Read & Play Method by Bellin/Ponzetti. It's OOP and a little dated but it concentrates more on the ideas, tactics and structures than the variations themselves.

So basically for playing KID, How many sub variation I must know? Since google it there are many small sub variations.

Sac4win

Kings indian & sicilian requires lot of preparation as compared to any other opening.
