Need system to play against 1. d4

Leningrad Dutch. The set-up is simple to learn, the move order doesn't matter much, and you can play the same moves almost no matter what White does.

I like The Stonewall Dutch. Basically you spend time (or waste time if you're cynical) building a big wall of pawns and making a serious claim on the e 4 square. It slightly weakens blacks kingside though and if you lose your dark squared bishop things can get grim. Your opponent will hate it though! It's not called a stone wall for nothing....

Careful with the Dutch. If you know the French, start with e6, then go f5 to avoid a lot of nasty traps.

This thread started 9 years ago. I wonder how the OP did in his tournament.

BTW, if you're playing in a tournament "next week", you want to have something prepared at least a month ago.

There's the classical dutch and stonewall dutch which are good, are good, and there's king's indian or gruenfeld, queen's gambit or the slav defenses -- d4 is the second most popular opening and there are lots of possible replies. Just look at the databases.

a pity Jay staff dislikes benonis , i find c5 is a fun way to get at d4

I've had this problem a lot over the years. I've done quite well with the Budapest, even though I don't think it's particularly good against a well-prepared opponent. And if White plays 2.Nf3, making the Budapest impossible, I use a QGD line, such as the Semi-Tarrasch.

Has jay been here since 2007?

just look at typical games in solid openings like Nimzo indian, queens indian, slav, semi slav, queens gambit declined/ragozin and then decide which makes most sense for you. basically where you get the ideas. i would avoid too complicated Stuff like the grünfeld in the beginning and add them later to your game.
