I don't get it, it's a Lowenthal where Black gets lobotomized on move 6.

I mean, yes, Black could take the knight. But the idea of the Lowenthal is to provoke White into taking the knight and giving you three pawns in the center. If they play Bc4, you can play a developing move like Nf6 or Bb7 instead of counting wrong and rushing d5.
Alternately, White can retreat their knight to b3 or f3, but then Black holds more center space and can develop more quickly because White is burning tempi moving their knight too much.
The best computer move is to not capture the knight, but to play Nb5, to which Black can play a6, which results in Nd6+, Bxd6, Qxd6, then Black responds with Qe7 which either provokes a queen trade or White backs off.
