lol That game by no means justifies that system, he was helped out by the fact he was playing a 1500 player, and that player also moved both wing pawns out!

I dare you to try it against me! That crab will be lured in with a slice of bacon and then trapped in my net of central pawns. mmm.. crab Tongue out.

It's no good daring me to play "The Crab", I'm no advocate for the opening, kindly address those sort of challenges to the man himself. I merely posted in order to demonstrate that HoboKombat did indeed play these lines. Do you remember your post of disbelief?

Or a4 AND h4, crab it up.

"Were you being serious? You probably were joking, but I just want to make sure."

Well, now you can be sure, he wasn't joking.

p.s. Please be sure to post the game here, when and if, you and HoboKombat lock horns. I hope you win, as a loss to The Crab would be somewhat ignominious. Wink

I know, I was commenting to him, but I had to quote the game to put it in context. That should be its official name "the crab". I guess the settup may vaguely resemble a crab aswell, the a and h pawns are the pincers! like the Sicilian Dragon looking a bit like a dragon to some people. I wasn't putting out a direct game challenge to him, only if he absolutely insists that it has merit then he knows where I am to play.

I rather suspect moving one's pawn three squares on the first move would indeed catch the opponent off-guard, an unorthodox approach, there's no doubt. Laughing

I suggest the kings gambit!

Youll catchur opponent by surprise! ;p

Look up the polar bear opening on youtube. It is a great opening that i've used to win many games with. Many call it bird's opening but GM Danielson developed a great system with it. Just watch his lectures. My first tournament I played it against a 1900 and drew him so it's not bad at all.

I'd go with the Creepy Crawly.... http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1026344

You could try NF3 and transpose into a Catalan Opening or a Queen's Gambit you could even transpose back in to an english opening.

Yep, if you play English then definitely look up Catalan and you can transpose into it! You will comfortable because it's similar but it might throw your opponent off.

Well I chickened out and ended up using the opening I'm used to (English), I ended up winning because of a solid opening (got a 3 point advantage early on). Good news is I get to stay at first board since I won the challenge match, bad news is tomorrow we play some school that has a first board ranked at 2100 or so. Any suggestions on not getting steam rolled would be swell (I play black).

That's good, you stuck to your guns and won.It only proves one thing...you trust what you play and it brought you success. Congrats!.

A suggestion for not getting steam rolled?

Well.. i'll give you a breather bro. I once saw a film which featured a group of highschool students playing for a US highschool championship. They were called the "mighty pawns"( anyone please help me find the film and the title thanks) and was based on a true story. The lead actor was i think a guy named "Tate". He was afraid to lose to an opponent in the finals because his rating was lower than that of his opponent. But his coach motivated him by saying "A player can beat us a million times because he is strong...but if we manage to beat him even once, there will always be that "one time". The guy played the black pieces and before tha game his opponent asked him "What's youre rating?" Tate replied " 1815 whats yours?" With a proud gesture his opponent replied "2150". They played and at one point the opponent offered the draw " Congratulations we have a draw" but Tate declined and went on to win the game and the championship.

How I wished i can remember this films title. It was a true story that happened in the late 70's (i think it was "78) and this film has been a motivation for me to believe that no matter how high my opponents rating is and no matter how strong he is there will always be that "one time".

Lastly, as a brotherly advice...whatever you have prepared to play as black, don't doubt it  and trust your judgement.Never ever doubt your capabilities. You have made it this far, when you stuck to your guns. Kramnik once said "The reason why they lost to Kasparov is because they were afraid of him" ( get the point?).Good luck...I mean.. Good eyesight, great sportsmanship, great defense and attack and most of all a good rest before the game. I hope you would post the game here.Wink

Thanks for the words of wisdom and as soon as I get back tomorrow I will post the game. I have recently (past few months) become a chess junkie, I really can't stop reading about it and trying to learn new things however I have no idea how the rating system judges your skill.

Ruy Lopez.  If you have time, look at some games of Fischer.  He was the master of it.
