Opening moves for black

What is a better reply to 1.e4 the french defense , the caro kann defense or the sicilian defense your comments will be greatly appreciated

The caro kann is the best defense for e4.

first of all. the best resort to go is e5. witht hat being said i prefer the Sicilian above all. THe CaroKann might be the best defense though i rarely go into it.

THe French is ok and seen on high levels but the reason i dont like it is because the games tend to be drawish.

For beginners, learn as much e5 then c5 as you can. c6 and e6 are very positional and will tend to lock you into the same plan most games.

The best reply is to play something different a few times then stick with the most cmfortable for YOU.

The c5 leads to more imbalanced positions and sharper play, while c6 allows black to develope without creating any major weakness but allows white to develope freely.

All three are fine and will give you a good game.   It depends on you.  I used to play the French a lot, the Caro occasionally, now I'm experimenting with the Sicilian and the Ruy.
