Opening question(s)

What is the difference between the English Opening and the Reti? I have been using the computer analysis of my games and it almost always, when I play white says that I am playing the English Opening; Agincourt Defense.

I will state up front that I do not know much about openings (I have studied, briefly, 2 defenses for black and 2 openings for white...although I have given up on the Queen's Gambit for now.) But I am trying to learn.

Another related question I have is when I am analyzing my games what should I look for? The computer anaylsis on this site tends to show me a lot of "inaccuracies" but the differences seem to be very subtle and I am not sure I have the knowledge to understand them just yet.

English is 1.c4 with some lines transposing into the Reti, depending on how you decide to play it.

Reti is 1.Nf3 with kingside fianchetto, usually with an early c4. Some of these lines easily transpose as well.

So, to answer your question, it all depends which specific line in the "in between area" you follow as to what the opening is classified as.

I see. I guess most of my games transpose to an English Opening then. I was just curious. It probably isn't as important as improving my understanding of tactics and of positional play anyway at this point. But it is still nice to know.

The English does not allow black to play d5 which is the most effective way of dealing with someone playing the reti. The reti stops black from playing e5 but imo it is not as critical.
