Opening similar to the Sicilian Defense - With Less theory

Don't worry about theory. In your first-ever chess tournament, both you and your opponents will be out of book by move 5 at the latest.

I still frequently find myself out of theory after five moves. That's not a problem, because I have a pretty good idea of what my plan should be. In your case, your plan should be to fight for the center, develop all your pieces, and avoid hanging stuff. That's stuff you can do in the Sicilian just as readily as in any other opening!
