 However with no opening knowlege, you won't make it to the endgame, or if you do, you will be at a severe disadvantage.

I think it's better at below master level to get a pretty good understanding of endgames (most importantly being able to convert material advantages into wins) and middle game then study the opening alot. Once you understand middle game strategy it's important to learn how to get to good middle games through the opening and also know what kind of middlegames you're getting into depending on what openings you use.

Chess is nothing like sprinting, as if you and your opponent both play the opening well, you will probably be even. The game is decided in the middlegame, and the result is then converted with proper endgame play.
