Openings you DESPISE!

the love fest's over! what are those openings and lines that you hate facing, or even having to play?

I hate facing almost EVERYTHING as black except 1.d4 now because I've finally found MY current favorite happy englund hartlaub/charlick gambit happy

hate having to "slav-wall" evil

hate the toothless marshall scandinavian evil despite an actual winning record

I REALLY hate the french evil evil evil after all the pummeling I took facing it as a 1400, and even now after over a decade of trying to find a working gambit (FORGET monte carlo! black won't allow it!) it IS so delicious crushing black in under 20, when I do in the alapin diemer gambit happy, but I still have a slightly losing record with even that

I can't stand trench weasel hypermoderns pirc, modern & owens evil evil evil evil

what lines drive you nuts?

Have you tried the wing?
I am both e4 and nf3 player, so
As nf3, i HATE the black mustang. That’s all
As e4, french is a pain in the aas, cuz i never prepare the wing gambit properly(ironic)
Alekhine and nimzowitsch, cuz i never know what to do against them.
As black, london system, exchange french, both Nc3 and Nd2 french(cuz i play the blackburne).
Exchange caro kann with Bd3 and h3, advanced en passant caro kann, alapin sicilian, declined lisbon gambit against the london

Have you tried austrians or byrnes against hypermoderns?(only pirc, modern and lion. Doesn’t work against owen. I like the Naselwaus gambit for that purpose)

did not like sicilian wing gambit or the lousy pamplet (book my butt... half of it wasn't even wing gambit!) I bought to play it

i'll have to look into the "black mustang", I'm guessing you're using a slightly different name than I remember for the 1...Nc6 for everything system. dark knight system... different way to say the same thing it seems

if you hate the london, try the hartlaub/charlick! punish londons for pre-moving 2.Bf4?? after you 1...e5!? (!) like I said, I love that open tactical anti-pawn pushing EASY TO LEARN system.

if alekhine vexes you, try the underrated krejcik!

You have to be wary of a retreat for your queen sometimes, but often you can chase black all over the board constantly developing attacks on him. if nothing else, you've stolen his castle rights and boxed his rook in. I have won 6 out of 10 games with it plus a draw. I'm 67% in 2.e5 games too, but krejcik is funner. i like it when i can actually trip an opponent up positionally as I'm position challenged

i REALLY used to despise the nimzo as a 1400 getting stomped by 1200s against it, but now destroy it. i have won EVERY one of these games:

chasing and hobbling the knights seems effective followed by basic development and/or defense as needed. i'm just going by intuition here. no study. pushing whatever pawn you can push after d4 gains you space. THERE... I just talked positional for ONCE in my life! where's my effing gold star and smiley face stickers? LOL

dfgh123

Kings gambit- it's 2023 not 1823 too wild

Caro kann- feels more like a d4 opening when I play the exchange variation

Scandinavian as white- doesn't happen often enough to get good facing it

as a scandinavian player myself, NO ONE plays the blackmar diemer gambit (the unsound tennyson is the rage these days) I tried the 3.Nc3 varisation, even shared theory for a BRUTAL "ice queen" variation with 75% stats, but it just never clicked with ME. I do poorly in lines that play Nc3 or Nc6 1st. I'm doing just fine with the 3.f3 gedult variation though. THAT one gets accepted almost every time

love it because it's king's gambit and BDG related... I'm destroying caros with the mieses gambit & using the same semi-open f file and same Nf3/Bc4 attack f7 asap plans

"main line" modern scandinavian!

The wing: 1. e4 c5 2. b4 cxb4 3. a3 d5 boom wing refuted. You can thank me later.

i never have to face the london with my 1...e5!?

CaroKannEnjoyer02

The only openings I hate are the sicilian if I am playing as white, and the Caro-Kann; Exchange variation.

You may think that at my level, I wouldn't be facing the Sicilian much, and you're right, I dont, but when I do, its a hassle. They even know the theory! Why are they doing this at 650 elo?!? How aren't they higher?!?

The caro kann exchange variation sucks because its SO BORING. Its not too bad though, black gets plenty of chances to break the symmetry.

whites attempt to play the fried liver is pain, it will never work! never!

Despise.
Reason: it's bad for black but when it swings in their favor somehow it's through some insane tactic that activates all his pieces at once out of nowhere. Somehow this opening Black normally gets positions you can barely look at but then they somehow find a way to swing it around and win. So the ugly positon to suddenly amazing ratio is extreme.

Despise! All of this family of Orangutan, Polish, Grob, Borg, whatever... These ones just makes my blood boil. I'm tilted the second I see this. I beat them more often than not but that dosen't mean it dosen't tilt me. I'm just overly happy when I do beat them and feel a huge relief. people who play this are usually very aggressive, fast, very tricky and never give up.

This one is also similar to the ones above... It's really bad, but those who play it are normally just better than me at chess so they can afford to play horrible openings because their tactics are just sick. I'm including all the Duras Gambit, Rosseau, or all kinds of different ways they can play Latvian style... Very nasty players. Respect to them!

also true.. I once thought this was you can "refute" the double fianchetto but actually it's not possible to refute.. which is weird. you have to sweat to beat it

You would hate facing me with you as Black. I play 1.b4 and 1.g4 as White.

The opening I hate most, from either side, and avoid like the plague, is the Grunfeld!
