Recently, a discussion about the the history and development of firearms was locked without explanation. https://www.chess.com/forum/view/off-topic/guns-for-mexi-66301227?page=1

The staff member or moderator that locked it didn't even have the decency to identify who they were.

This discussion was already being moderated by the OP and other members actively involved. As far as I am aware, nothing in this discussion violated the sites TOS.

If I'm wrong, then I would appreciate it if the unknown person that locked it would explain why.

When the site feels like a topic is inappropriate, or that the progression of a topic has crossed some line of decency, then the people starting or participating in these topics need to be told why.

How are we supposed to correct our behavior if we don't have clear and concise guidelines of what is acceptable and what is not?

justbefair

It's unlocked.

Sir_TrashPanda

Thank you.

AlCzervik

thanks, justbefair. gomer and mexi (when he comes back) will be happy.

What's the opposite of an anonymously locked thread? I know. It's a publicly locked thread. Like a public execution. Makes more of an impression.

Another one bites the dust. No explanation why. No identification from the staff member or moderator that locked it.

At what point did this topic cross the line?

I didn't see that post. Thanks for mentioning it.

However, that doesn't answer the questions of "Why was this topic locked and not the threads the topic was addressing" and "At what point did this topic cross the line"?

This topic was not "trivializing" anyone's personal experiences. It was asking what the site was willing to do to help resolve these situations.

Have staff or moderators directly responded to any of the threads mentioned?

"Why was this topic locked and not the threads the topic was addressing?"

We need to be comprehensive when someone's life could be in danger. Reproducing and relinking to threads when there's potential harm does the exact opposite of that. There's always a chance that a member doesn't mean it, however we must never take this for granted. The safety of our members always comes first.

"At what point did this topic cross the line?"

It did not cross the line, but at a risk of one taking harmful action, it could potentially further indulge such which is something we don't want to happen to anyone.

We have reached out and once learned that someone is safe we'll then approach the content.

"This topic was not 'trivializing' anyone's personal experiences. It was asking what the site was willing to do to help resolve these situations."

To clarify, the topic was locked not because of the subject itself, but because the discussion was beginning to veer into unproductive territory, including sarcasm and comments that risked further distress of these individuals.

"Have staff or moderators directly responded to any of the threads mentioned?"

Because of the sensitive nature of this topic, we are limited as to what we can share publicly. Rest assured that it is taken seriously. We appreciate members bringing these cases to our attention in a discreet manner and never to engage apathetically, so that we can keep our community strong and help those in need as fast as we can.
