Orangutang with black (1.b4)

thanks for replying. These lines have been under my scope, but Houdini and I don't see the advantage :)

In theory, you will not get an advantage with the black peices, unless white makes some sort of error.
1.b4 is, at worst, a developing move. The GM's poo-poo it, because it allows black to equalize easier than some other first moves. It by no means is a "self-destruct button."
When you see it, play a few moves, equalize, and rthen figure out what the strengths of your position are, and how to exploit them.
But asking for an advantage from move one with the black pieces is unrealistic, regardless of what whites first move was.

No human being playes like Houdini. But these are good lines in very rare opening. There is maby no huge ''advantage'' but just play the game and you will have fine position. 1.b4 is underestimated opening and it dosen't give black advantage. I've played it with white and very few players know how to response, that's what make the opening good for white. If you play these lines with black the position is fine fore black, fine for white and the game just goes on!

You might be right: Maybe I should be satisfied by equalizing with the black pieces

What works for me is to develop normally without playing Nc6 too quickly. I usually get good squares for my pieces, resulting in middle game initiative.
So yeah as above said; equalise and then win.

Sorry for the late answer.
FrogCDE: That line is interesting, I will analyze it :)
billyblatt: Thanks for the helpfull analysis of this line.
GreedyPawnGrabber: Interesting, but how would you respond to 2.b5 for the most common white moves?

Which line do you hate facing most Peter ?
Incidentally, I like 1Nf3 Nf6 or d5 2 b4 for white - and REVERSED 1d4 Nf6 2Nf3 b5. I feel they are underestimated lines.

I appreciate that you are trying to beat my (now for 35 years) favorite Sokolsky's 1. b4. opening. Please keep at it. One is most incentivized to improve by getting new challenges.
Just for your further 'encouragement', I always play it (my rating here is now 2456) and in my 44 b4 games here I won 35 (80%), drew 6 (14%) and lost 3 (7%), and most of the draws and losses can be fixed in future games.
Hi Peter
More than a year has passed since I started this thread, and in the meantime I have figured out how I will meet 1.b4, and I think I can obtain a slight advantage!
I can't tell if you are indirectly challenging me or not? But a challenge from you will be accepted (you:white, me:black, 1.b4). However, I think that even if I should obtain a slight advantage from the opening, the rating gab between us will favor you anyway.
Hi members
Despite its less good reputation the orangutang always causes me problems in blitz games. Therefore, I decided to find a really good way to reject 1.b4 with the aid of Houdini and databases. For my surprise I only find lines which equalizes, which is also good, but I was hoping to find a slight advantage with the black pieces. Therefore, I would like to hear your best lines against 1.b4, and definitely the ones giving advantages for black.
