Overrated Openings

hmm i find the sicilian quite good although i geuss u r right its like the center pawns 'good but overglorified' i think that the sicilian falls nicely into that category.

The Sicilian works for Garry Kasparov, but a numpty like me pretending to exploit the nuances of the Najdorf is a joke. I don't doubt it gives Garry winning chances, but all it gives me is the chance to look silly for twelve moves before succumbing to the inevitable kingside attack.

Although not too popular, Bird's is still overrated.
I diagree, the Bird's is well under rated & there for over looked & hence not common!

I agree. The Bird is powerful and fun.
When I read the thread title, but before reading the initial post, I wanted to say that 1.e4 is overrated because so many play it exclusively. But, your anti-centerpawnism moves me towards defense of the classical style.
I think the KIA is overrated, and that offbeat lines--anti-Sicilians, anti-French, etc.--are generally overrated. Bizarre maneuvers to take an opponent out of book are overrated, except in the hands of Tony Miles.

The sicilian is definitely overrated.
i SWORE he was going to say Classical French
The french is criminally underrated!!
And yes the sicilian is generally overrated, usually by people who don't play it.
Also, 1...e5 against e4 I find to be vastly underrated by most amateurs.
I have posted a forum thread on what people thought the most underrated openings were but then i decided to make a new one asking for the most overrated opening. So plz post what you think is the most overrated opening system/move. My top picks for overrated opening moves are advancing either one of the center pawns. Not that these moves are bad but they are so wildly popular and praised beyond what they are really worth. Please dont flame this post with comments about my anti-centerpawnism.
