Ok, this isn't about me and openings - it's just a general question.
When reading threads and articles about "what openings for X" or "best openings for X" etc. many, if not all, will make some sort of comment about choices being somewhat dependent upon the players "playing personality" i.e. aggressive players preferring aggressive openings, etc.
But...then if a player asks for such opening suggestions (aggressive, passive, etc.) they get lectured about how any opening can be aggressive/passive, it depends on how the opponent replies, etc. and choosing an opening by such parameters is misguided.
So...the question is, does one's personality make any difference to which openings he or she should choose?
Yes very much so. There are some openings that cannot be played well and aggressively despite what some lower rated players think. For example, openings like the QGA, or Berlin defence, have to be played in a solid way. If you play aggressively your opponent might mess up but you will give your opponent many chances to be much better if not winning. On the other hand, any gambits or openings like the KID or most variations of the sicilian have to be played aggressively or black will be worse because he won’t have an initiative.
