Hey,

I've recently been interested in the pirc, but i noticed that since it's not the most popular opening the resources just aren't there like with other openings. So I was wondering if all of you could help me out posting variations, example games, resources, main ideas, ect.

Thanks,

CalWizz

some basic things to keep in mind-

your dark-square bishop is the #1 hunter in the army.. dont give him up!

the pirc is all about coming strong with a counterpunch via pawns. always look at ways each side can use pawns to open lanes into the enemy position.

It's a trap!!

What is more common in the pirc?  The pawn break ...e5 or c5?

birdboy1

I like c5, just because it doesn't block the dark bishop's diagonal

Can anyone suggest an "Super GM" that play the pirc???

Mamedyarov plays it every once in awhile, and even Kramnik whips in out in rapid events when he wants to win with black. Fernando Peralta is one active GM who plays the Pirc quite often, with good results.

What is the most popular variation you guys see when you play the pirc. The Classical variation or the Austrian Attack???

Bobby played the austrian frequently and with success I think, while Karpov played some great games in the classical variation.

Austrian is considered the main line... most dangerous too IMO

Nevertheless, when I venture the pirc I see the classical most of the time. Most people don't have the chutzpah to play the austrian.

Check out the everyman series book the pirc in black and white. A huge book that is well written on the pirc for black. (Tough opening though, gotta watch that kingside attack BE3 QD2 then Bh6 exchange bishops pawn exchange and rook queen mate or some other variation.
