Pirc or modern

Hi guys!

Has anybody here had experience with both openings; could you tell me about the pros and cons of each opening. I have developed an interest in the pirc/modern and have purchased Pirc Alert! I am looking for a resource on the pirc/modern and 2 books have come up. The modern Tiger and Chess developments the pirc. Right now i can only get one and am confused on which one to get. The one i get will decide whether i play the pirc or the modern. Thanks!

They may transpose into one another, certainly, but the modern defense is just characterized by ...g6 and ...Bg7, as far as I know, and that can lead a various number of different openings.

The Pirc is more specific. So if you play the Pirc, it's just a variation of the modern - the ideas are very similar, and there's no need to understand the "difference" between them, unless you're having trouble understanding the ideas of the Pirc.

Why not read Pirc Alert? I seriously doubt those other books (although they are good I'm sure) are going to teach the opening as thoroughly.

They r pretty similar but i suggest u the pirc to avoid strange white variations like 2) h4 vs the modern.

Yes i am currently reading Pirc alert(sorry should have been more clear) to grasp the main ideas but was looking for a book with some theory.

By the modern i mean tiger's variation

I am confused on whether to play this or the pirc.

I am edging towars tiger's variation since I avoid the bryne variation and quick Bh6 stuff

but I do not know whether Tiger explains the main ideas for a player that is just starting out in his book

I doubt anything but Pirc Alert does this. Everything else is for more advanced players.

One important difference is what these two openings do against early Bh6 by white. For example there is a Pirc defense line that goes 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.f3 c6! 5. Be3 b5! Note that bishop stays on f8, so that White does not gain a tempo by exchanging a piece thhat moved to g7. Modern defense treatment is different: bishop goes on g7, knight temporarily stays on g8, Bh6 would lose a piece.

Now one can argue both ways: Pirc move order puts more pressure on White center, and restricts the number of possible setups. Modern move order prevents getting stuck with silly bishop on f8.

Generally, in Pirc You will need more theoretical knowledge, and in Modern you will need more "feel" what can be played and what cannot. In both openings You risk getting a devastating loss from time to time.

I favor Pirc, often into a King's Indian Defense (depending on whether or not white takes e5). It is a tricky opening because one false move and you've smothered your pieces behind your pawns, giving white a major advantage.
The Modern Defense, Tiger Variation is less committal, giving black time to see how white wants to develop before bringing out more pawns and pieces.
