IN MY DEFENSE, it was a blitz tournament. I don't make illegal moves if you give me time

Update for anyone who cares: I got crushed! Twice or maybe three times I made illegal moves, and I lost to extremely small children on several occasions. I got beat by, well, I don't even know what openings because I was too busy making illegal moves. And it was a blast! I highly recommend real life chess. Thanks for the help yall

so my advice was to late?

At least you had fun. I think that happens with a lot of us, dispite the losses, we always think of it as a great time.

Memorizing openings isn't nearly as important as learning how to come up with good moves on your own. A club level player could know no opening moves, but still win against a 1200 player with vast amounts of memorized theory. Memorizing 10+ moves in to every opening you know should be reserved for players above 2000 elo. At the level that you are currently at, stick with tactics.
