For the queen's gambit opening as white, is it better to place the dark squared bishop outside the pawn chain or keep it inside to defend the c3 knight?

In general you need it outside the pawn chain if you're hoping for an advantage.

Usually in the queens gambit black will eventually isolate white's d pawn and this opens some nice lines for your pieces including your Dark Squared Bishop
