What do you think about the queen's gambit? I do not play this opening, as I mainly use the reti, king's indian... But with so many masters using the opening, (almost all the top 5) it makes me wonder what is so special about it?  Please, all queen's gambit practictioners, enlighten me, and perhaps show me one of your best games in the opening Laughing

i'm always hoping to play QGD as white.  the reason i like it is because the strategic ideas that come about are both powerful and easy (sort of) to understand.  The reason i say "easy" is that the positions that arise after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 are so consistently similar, and contain many of the same ideas.  There are a lot of directions you can go, and still utilize those same ideas.  I also find one can direct things into a more slow, positional battle, if one is so inclined, rather than sharp crazy middlegames.  It's a style choice.

The Queen's Gambit is rather a large field, of what specifically do you ask?  The QGD which is the epitome of a closed game, the QGA trading space for development, the Henning-Schaara tossing pawns for an attack, the slav and so on?  Also do you mean as White or as Black?

I am talking about the queen's gambit declined, specifically the slav defense, and also the delayed accepted, etc.  as black i love the qg, since I am studied in the kid.

It is a sound gambit, sound enough for grandmasters to use it regularly

I really like the Queen's Gambit as an attack. If the opponent declines, you have good central control and good development opportunities. If the opponent accepts, you have great central control and great development opportunites, and the pawn is really easy to win back. As black, I really like the Slav and Semi Slav defenses.

Avatar of shuttlechess92

really? I find it to be very unspacious for black, but that is rather hypocritical since i'm a kid player =)

I've played and occasionaly still do play the Slav defense, mainly when I want a break from my Nimzo/Queens Indian complex.  I've not seen many d4 games of late so I'm somewhat out of practice.  I don't really like the semi-slavs for no other reason than I just didn't like them.  Didn't feel right for me even though they are fine defenses.  I like the slav because it gives a variety of choices and good fighting chances.

I just like 1. d4 in general, QG is a great play. Trampowski is awesome too.

The QG is fun but the only one I can get to play it is my computer.  The Tromp is ok for OTB but I find it lacks long term pressure and poses insufficient problems for Black.  I find more chances in the ML indians but I admit that is in correspondence play.

I think the queen's gambit is the best opening. It gives white the most initiative than any other opening without sacrificing a pawn (The queen's gambit is not a real gambit, but sometimes it can be played that way). If white plays well black will generally have trouble finding counterplay let alone defending against white.

the king's indian leads to dynamic games, so I do look forward to white playing the queen's gambit, but I am not too eager as white because the nimzo-indian variation give white a doubled pawn.

Avatar of Elubas

I think I might try the trompowsky attack, because I really don't like playing against the kings indian or nimzo indian

Avatar of shuttlechess92

what is the trompowsky attack? could you show a game sequence?

Avatar of Rugged-Defence

I find the variations of the QG where white goes for the minority attack on the queenside very interesting Cool

the zot is good fun and it allows you to enter a variation of the RAT system

The Tromp

1.d4  Nf6

2. Bg5

Black can then reply in a variety of ways depending on his preferences.  d5, g6, Ne4, e6, c5 are all respectable.

arg seems to be against the king's indian =(

Avatar of CarlMI

The idea of the Tromp is to sidestep Indian setups.  It is not as strong as the main lines against each of the indians but it does avoid a lot of the theory.
