I personally don't play the Queen's Gambit Declined (i.e I don't play ...d5) but I used to because I had no idea of the Queen's Gambit before. From what I've experienced if the opponent likes trading and trades pawns quickly the position will be very open and it is very likely one of you will get an isolated d pawn. If not, the position will remain closed for a while, until the pawn exchanges start. It's pretty similar to the French exchange variation for in the first circumstance (i.e. trading quickly), considering that I play the French myself. Also, players of the Queen's Gambit might play g3 after e6 and then fianchetto, making it a Catalan.
I have recently decided to switch back to the French Defense as my e4 defense. I like it a lot, and it should serve me well for years.
I have been playing various Indian Defenses for d4, but am considering trying the Queen's Gambit Declined, with a 1. d4 e6 (allowing for a transposition back to the French) 2. c4 d5 move order, as the pawn structure is identical.
Can someone tell me a little about this opening? Does it always stay closed? Is it similar at all in play to the French? What I like about the French is its solid nature, then counter attack in the center. Does the QGD operate similarly?
Thanks!
