Question on openings for beginners

I’ve recently started playing chess again and I’ve been advised to try and master a single opening to play when I’m white. My question is what opening is best for someone who likes a less fast paced game. As of know I tend to open with the Vienna game and just develop my pieces in general. Thanks.

Games that begin with 1.d4 tend to stay closed longer (so they're slower moving).

I would suggest the following repertoire, which is pretty simple:

1.d4 and now:

If Black plays 1...Nf6 and after 2.Nf3 either plays 2...e6 or 2...g6, play what is called the Torre Attack (3.Bg5)

If Black plays an early ...d5, then the Torre is ineffective.  Play the Colle (or anti-Colle - depends on Black's next move).

So lines would include:

1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 e6 3.Bg5

1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Bg5

1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 d5 3.e3!

1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.e3!

In the case of the last 2, you have the Colle and Anti-Colle and it depends on Black's third move.

If 3...e6, hemming in the LSB, then the Colle (4.Bd3 and 5.c3) is your answer.

If 3...Bf5 or 3...Bg4, known as the Anti-Colle because Black brings the Bishop out, then 4.Bd3 is useless.  You have to play 4.c4 and attack the quee side with his Bishop abandoning the Queenside Light Squares, like b7!

So it might go 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 d5 3.e3 Bf5 4.c4! c6 5.Nc3 e6 6.Nh4 Bg6 7.Nxg6 hxg6 and White has the Bishop Pair!

A simple repertoire that will take you a long way if you put in the work!
