Poll: What should I play as black against 1. e4?

  • French
  • Alekhine
  • Caro-Kann
  • ...

I know that sicilian is the best one but I don't find it really interesting (anyway I would accept a recomendation of which variation is the best).

I also know that I should be more worried with principles but I'm working out both and I'm just looking for one opening to start.

Info that may be useful:

  • I play 1. d4 as white (queen's gambit mainly) and right now as black I play the french (against e4 obv)
  • I also know how to play the London System and a bit of the Ruy Lopez and Scotch Gambit
  • 30% win with the french (18 rated games)
  • 50% win with Alekhine, Caro-Kann and Sicilian (4, 2, 2 rated games respectively)

I know that my stats as black are a piece of sh*t but I've been focusing on my game as white(52% win playing the queen's gambit and getting better every single game).

Thx for the help!

What matters is not %wins.  It is percent score!

If you played 20 games of each opening, 6 wins, 4 losses, and 10 draws is better than 10 wins and 10 losses.  The first is 55%.  The second is 50%.

The French, Caro-Kann, Sicilian, and 1...e5 are all far more sound than the other 16 responses to 1.e4.  Which of the 4 is best?  Depends on the person.  For me, it is the French, but for someone else, it could be 1...e5.  If the Sicilian is not your cup of tea, try the other 3.  Forget about the rest of them.  Pirc?  Modern?  Alekhine?  Scandinavian?  Forget it!

Move a pawn two squares so either 1...c5 or 1...e5. If you want fall asleep at the board then 1...e5. If you want to counterattack at the right moment then 1...c5

Kara can is my personal favorite but French is good too.

The alekhine is a very theoretical opening that most players don't know any theory on at all. I'm a 1750 rated player (I only play 15+10 competitively), and I almost never feel theoretically challenged by my opponent. Although it is not popular at the top level because white can get an edge in the modern variation, the opening is very powerful at below 2400 rating. In my experience, half of your opponents will play 2. Nc3 when black equalise after 2... d5! 3.e5 Nd7 4.d4 c5. Where black has an improved french defence and stands at least equal (although the opening explorer would suggest a large advantage for black).

Would you mind to explain? Caro Kann is probably the most passive/drawish defence to e4 that there is.

The Caro-Kann is passive/aggressive. It makes a determined attempt to bore White to sleep.

What about the Pirc? 1. e4 d6 2. d4 is most commonly played. 2... Nf6 3. Nc3 g6 (fianchetto) 4. g3. (5... Bg7 6. Bg2 0-0 Nge2).

I usually play the Caro-Kann

Play the caro, don't play the french or one of your bishops will have a hard time getting into the game.

  1. In my opinion, for people just starting out, the French and Caro-Kann defense are the best. Find which one you like better and stick to it. By playing Sicilian or 1. e5, you have to be prepared to memorize a lot of theory.
