Recommend a defense against 1. d4?

Hi. I've been tring to play the King's Indian for a while, but I've found it WAAAAY too complicated for me (my otb rating is 1205). I was hoping someone could recommend another opening for me to play? I've been looking at ...d5, but I've found those positions to be much too bland. If it helps, I play the English 1. c4 as white and the French ...e6 as black against 1 e4.

What do you mean by 'bland' when you describe the positions after 1.d4 d5? Or are you referring to the position with White to move after Black plays a symmetrical defense?

1.d4 d5 leads to some of the most exciting lines in chess, I'd like to see what you saw that you consider to be 'bland' especially if you play the English and French.

QGD Tarrasch. It's a great "starter" opening for novices, and has been played in world championships. Some players who used the Tarrasch regularly include Spassky and a young Garry Kasparov.

Maybe just 1...e6 then 2...d5 with a french or a queens gambit?

Expertise87

basicxtreme - I was planning on suggesting that but noticed he said the 1.d4 d5 positions are bland and that needs clarification before recommending the QGD

The clarification is found in the OP's rating.

Oh, sorry.  I guess I should work on my reading comprehension.  Next random opening suggestion...nimzo indian.  Though maybe I'm not one to offer advice.  Smile

NF6 and the benoni

I agree with the Tarrasch.  Super easy to learn and works against d4 sidelines.

the Cambridge springs lines of the QGD are pretty good for beginners and advanced players

try albin counter gambit with d4/d5/c4 and budapest defence lines to improve overall, budapest is most easy to play for black with dozens of trap and sound play but hopelessly underrated at below GM level because they dont play it!!

Ok good to know. Thank you very much!!!

Follow? Research as to what is popular against an opening i play. By all means talk on. Wanna keep it a secreat tell nobody. Sure i am not the only d4 player looking this over. For a while i did wonder why players were playing certain openings all of the sudden until i took a good look in these threads. Then i just study the main line versus them.

When i first came to this site some the above mentioned used to give me some serious problems. Then i started playing Vote Chess and saw how the 2000+ rated players counter them. Now more relaxed as then i was sweating like a dog.

I like to play 1...Nf6 as a defense against 1.d4 and there's nothing wrong with that.

You can have a easy game playing the KID, Nimzo Indian, Queen's Indian, or Grunfeld.

The only theory I didn't know on 1...Nf6 is the trompowsky one which goes for 2.Bg5 immediately.

Yeah that is a funny one. It will allow you know it the person is playing out the book. It will most likely lead to white playing the 4 pawns attack. Which favors black in way. They can attack at  any given moment during the opnening leaving white to always be on alert and Black will remain relaxed. Mental edge black only if white allows black to continue plans.

When I said bland, I meant the the lines I looked at with ...d5 looked a bit passive; however, I hven't checked out the Tarrasch. I'll look into it.

I third the Tarrasch. Active, classical chess.
