Response against D4

What would the forum consider the most appropriate opening to play against D4 for a player who likes the French Defense and English Opening?

MindGrabber

semi slav maybe little bit similar with french defence ideas !!! my self I just declined the queens gambit 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 maybe this one good for french players

LostRedoubt

I have played the semi-slav for the last 18 month but have not enjoyed it as much. The QGD seems a bit too drawish to be honest. Although that view can be based on ignorance from me! I like to have good attacking opportunities.

Stonewall Dutch?

SnowyTheWolf

Just move your pawn below theirs? (below if your black, above of white)

GWTR

NID/BID or Stonewall Dutch

If you like the french you have the advantage of being able to play 1.e6

This can be used to reach a number of defences

1) English defence    2.c4 b6

2) Dutch avoiding all the nasty move Two stuff

3) Bogo type stuff delying Nf6

As long as you realize that trying to get good attacking opportunities early as black often gives better attacking chances for white, you might want to try the Modern Benoni and throw in a Benko Gambit every once in awhile.

The Queen's Gambit Accepted can play like an improved French.

You can play 1...e6 and hope that after 2.e4 you can transpose to French defence and if instead your opponent plays 2.c4 or 2 Nf3 you can continue as Nimzo-Indian with 2....Nf6

I personally like Nimzo against 1.d4 and play 1...Nf6, but I think that if you play e6 you'll find yourself playing a French defense often since many d4 players are itching to play e4 as well if you allow them (much of the Nimzo defense revolve around a fight for control of the d4 square).

I hope this helps, cheers.

mirror their d4 with a d5, and then use the knight opposite the knight they use.

or just basically use the queen's gambit accepted because its similar

The modern benoni does interest me. However, the past couple of times I played against those structure OTB, I murdered my opponent.

How about the Madcow defense, stonewalling variation? Its the easiest...just dont move at all when someone opens d4. Ive never seen anyone lose with the defense ever.

No one is recommending the Tarrasch Defense? It's quite similar to French Defense in terms of pawn structures achieved.

TwoMove

Think it is a bad idea for an inexperienced played to get involved in a complicated opening like the semi-slav. Think is more straightforward to play a slav, and get the light squared bishop developed, or a Queens Gambit Declined and usually aim for c5 break, after simple developing.  With the queens gambit can get familar with pawn structures that occur in many other queens pawn openings.

Stupidest advice I've ever heard.

okay @Lilboat21 do you have something better.

Good ideas all round. As for the mirror advise, what does the forum feel about the chigorin?

Maybe you can post the position as a chess board. This way we can understand what you mean.
