Ruy Lopez, Morphys Defense, 7. h3 Nxe4

Sort:
somnamb
Hi everyone
I recently played this defense with 7. ...Nxe4. Somehow I have in mind that this is a theoretical position, but I couldn't find out the name, nor some theoretical countinuations.
If anyone has any recources on this defense it would be great if you could post them.
Thanks
Shakaali

I haven't seen this particular position before so I don't have any real knowledge but isn't 8. d4!? also a candidate move.

This is commonly referred to as the "Morphy-Berlin-Old Steinitz variation." I may have made that up....nevermind.

Without 7. c3, the white bishop is nearly trapped. h3 does prevent the bishop from pinning the knight that prevents the trap...so far. I'm not sure about the pawn capture, that pawn is usually regained later. It allows the white bishop to escape.

It is kind of interesting.
