My current main repertoire is: White: e4 e5- Ruy Lopez c5- Alapin e6- Tarrasch c6- Classical (Nc3) Black: e4- c6 d4- d5 (QGD) I'm studying the Catalan opening, I really liked it because I can use it against everything Black does, it's very solid, but the question is: is it as interesting as Ruy Lopez? I understand that they are two totally different openings, but they both suit my taste, Ruy Lopez in my opinion is the best chess opening, Ruy can lead to different types of games, I believe it is excellent for developing my chess, but Catalan is very interesting. What is your opinion on Spanish x Catalan?

They are both very good! I actually was seriously considering playing the Catalan, but decided not, as somebody told me it was extremely complicated. However, it is VERY good, and if you like it, you should consider adding it to your opening repertoire!

One starts out with E4. The other Starts with D4. You would be surprised how many time you open with D4 and naturally play into the Catalan. Not sure as many as the Lopez but quite a few.

Catalan and Ruy lopez are both very sound and fun to play. And they are not totally different, both of them are meant to keep a long-term advantage and put pressure on your opponent. Your opening repertoire is very similar to mine, but I would change one thing for you. Your repertoire is very positional but you also need experience in tactical positions, therefore I would try to go and play the open Sicilian. Open sicilian is much more fun and really helps your tactical and calculating abilities.
