Ruy Lopez

The Ruy is a very good opening that is positional and therefore good to play at club level ONCE you have understood the basic ideas and are able to implement them in your games.

My favorite variation in the ruy is the Anti-Marshall as it leads to a very quick attack on black's queenside.

The King's Gambit has been refuted? I have seen over a hundred such forums with people enthusiastically saying they have refuted the sicilian, the french, the max lange attack, and more. Someone told me they had refuted 1.e4 by h5!!!

I mated him in under 20.

The King's Gambit is not refuted because Spassky won many games with it and Bobby Fischer actually played it twice in his tournament career and won both games. Furthermore, the Kings Gambit does not have that many lines  against it because the tactics involved quickly changes everything no matter what main line theory has to say.

If it is refuted could anyone tell me a specific refutation line.

Exactly!

Max Lange gets your seal of approval, but the KG doesn't?  Nxe4 is a lot closer to a final refutation of the Max Lange than any line black has against the KG.

And you can't very well cite writings by Capablanca in the 30's and Fischer in the early 60's as evidence of a "refutation," if the rest of your evidence says Spassky only won with it before it was "refuted."  Spassky kept playing high level chess with the KG till the 80's.  As did Bronstein.

The KG is definitely hard to play well against a prepared opponent.  But there's nothing like a theoretical refutation out there.

The KG is dead even on the chess.com master database (40.3% winning, 40.3% losing with a total of 4529 games).  The chess365 DB sucks, it only shows 542 games.  Chessgames.com shows the KG being dominent:

+3592 =1315 -2921

KG since 1980?

+1943 =845 -1648 (still dominates!)

Hardly refuted

Post a refutation line.

Maybe noone told Spassky the KG was refuted and thats why he has such a great record with it from the white side ?

17 wins, 1 loss and 12 draws with a refuted opening is astounding isnt it !?

Anyway i think the Ruy Lopez is played because it follows the principles of the opening very well, i myself dont play it cause i cant stand symetry in the opening

Symetry  leads to draws that is not the Ruy , Playing in a thematic Ruy Lopez toury now almost a Thousand games played only 22 draws !! I would estimate white wins 60 to 70%  of these games open or closed, seems to me that there are such imbalances in the positions created by the ruy lopez somewhat like the sicilian, but the majority of these games are decided in less than 40 moves. The ruy is a sharp opening that punishes tactical or strategical errors with vengence !!   Wink

Well, black can only choose the Marshall if white doesn't play the Anti-MarshallTongue out

Avatar of sammy345

Yeh i know that but i just cant bring myself not to break symetry on move one
