One of the best traps Viswanathan used to beat Vladmir Kramnik on the last round. This is why Viswanathan Anand is the current World Champion

Hi! This is the best trap in the world. e4 c5 c3 d5 exd5 qxd5 d4 cxd4 cxd4 nc6 nf3 bg4 be2 bxf3 bxf3 qxd4 bxc6+ bxc6 qxd4... White just simply wins game.

hmm, I dont think Anand would play the Alapin against Kramnik. Also, while a nice trap, it's very well known and occurs across a range of openings. It's a standard isolated queens pawn trap I guess, but the most common trap around the same idea is in the Be3 line of the Advance French. Good players don't set out to beat players with traps, and there is no way Kramnik would fall for a trap like this. If you want to trap Kramnik, you have to get your knight to the 8th rank.

First, as sstteevveen says, this is a well-known trap. It occurs in the Scandinavian and the Nimzowitsch defenses. Second, this will not scalp players who diligently look at all CHECKS and CAPTURES. In other words, you can hope for quick wins against players less than USCF 1200, but don't expect many quick victories beyond that level. :)

Actually a 1650+ player in my club used to playing more mainline sicilians all the time and crazy openings as white, and perhaps assuming 2.c3 meant an easy game (kind of a running joke as I really like 2.c3) fell for it in a casual otb 5 minute blitz game. Of course he only fell for it due to lack of familiarity combined with blitz time controls so he really wasnt looking very closely at what he was doing in what he thought was a 'safe' opening.

At blitz, yeah, I could see it working out better. No time for safety checks. :)

haha yeah, anything is possible in blitz. I was still surprised when he did it, and even then he saw it instantly when he looked at the position after making the capture. He saw it so fast I felt a little bad for not letting him play something else, but hey, in 5 min blitz against me otb he still had winning chances!
