I think 500,000 games since 1991 is a pretty good statistical sample.
There are many openings listed here and to be in the top ten means something.
Also in Vote Chess the fact that the Ponziani Vote Chess Team has won 13 games in a row with no losses or draws against some of the best teams also means something.
I am not saying the Ponziani is the best opening. I am saying on a practical basis it works very well for 99% of the players.
Pacifique had a blog filled with personal attacks and lies and Chess.com
deleted his blog and I think the blog was so offensive they have banned him from making more blogs.
He stated there is a Ponziani cult. [This is simply not true.]
He also states the "followers" believe that there should be no reason why their cult object [he means the Ponziani Opening] is not so popular as Sicilian or Ruy for example. [This was never said]
He also indicates that fans of Blackmar Diemer are "worshippers'
Then he says "Unfortunately Ponziani cult worshipers [there are none] have actitvated in chess.com during the last yar. [not true, I am the only one who activated forums on the Ponziani.]
Then he continues "Cult leader is Dave Taylor (ponz11) -retired CC player has made Ponziani hi religion [I am not a cult leader and Ponziani is not my religion and I am not a leader as I am not even in Ponziani Power Vote Chess Group]
Paciique goes on to make a bogus list of my claims which are mostly lies [I did not make the claims as he stated ]and then it gets worse from there. Personal extreme attacks were an abuse of Pacificque's blogging rights and that is why he was deleted by chess.com

Yes, that kind of garbage is what wikpedia says and many parrot it.
It quotes someone from 1904 and then continues. No doubt the Ponziani had a bad reputation for years but that is changing for the better.
It is not the best opening and it is not better than the Ruy Lopez but stats are close to the Ruy Lopez and it is in the top ten openings per results.
Almost as good as the Parham. Wait, maybe I should look it up on wiki.
In terms of generating butthurt on the site, the Ponziani is second only to the Parham.
I always go to wiki for answers.

If you have any basis for this accusation, you better start spelling it out.
I would bet the farm that if the top 10 GMs played a DRR thematic tourney in which the Ponziani was used that black would win or draw such a tourney . While I wont go so far as to say the Ponziani is bad I will say I dont believe its very good and white has several choices that are better/stronger and easier to play/comprehend .

LOL It was my blog post which was deleted, not me. I should accuse you in lies, according to your own logic. 
Your hysterical behaviour is the best evidence that I` posted true. Many people (which I did not know before) agreed with me. Probably it`s due to anti-Ponz conspiracy.

That "someone" was Frank Marshall - one of the best players in the World, contender for World champion title. Player who has introduced opening ideas which are actual even for modern top GMs.
And Marshall is correct. There are several variations, demonstrated in your Ponziani thread, proving that White has almost no chances to have opening advantage against prepared Black player.
Is the Scotch Game or Scotch Gambit better than the Ponziani? (regarding rating scores or even DISregarding them)
Amongst these openings Scotch Game is the the most popular opening used by many GM`s on a regular basis. It`s because of Black having the most problems to find equality here.
