Semi Slav: Shirov Shabalov Gambit!

Sort:
LavaRook

Recently, I have become interested in the Shirov- Shabalov Gambit. Until now, I've been playing 5.Bg5 but I'm tired of people choosing 5...Be7 or 5...Nbd7 when I am in a mood for an attacking game...

This is the Shirov Shabalov Gambit:

I will be looking at master games to get a feel for it but has anyone here tried it for themselves in their games? And are there any specific games you know of that I should study in more depth (rather than just playing through  the moves fast)?

It seems really dangerous for Black especially if he doesn't know the lines...

I don't know too much about it but I did some analysis on it with my computer and found that after:

1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6 5.e3 Nbd7 6.Qc2 Bd6 7.g4 Nxg4 8.Rg1 Qf6 9.Rxg4 Qxf3 10.Rxg7 Nf8 11.Rg1 Bxh2 12.Be2 Qh3 13.Bf1 Qf3 14.Be2 Qh3

it is a drawn position.

Sam discusses it briefly in his latest video, although he offers some different moves to the ones that were suggested by my computer.

Meffort, 8...Nxg4 is only the fourth most popular response on the chess.com opening explorer. I suppose black can choose that for a quiet game, but I think this gambit generally leads to sharp lines.

what is a gambit

A Gambit is giving away a Pawn to gain a superior position or an advantage in development you hope will lead to a superior position that more than compensates for the Pawn.

Sometimes, the other side can NOT hold on to the extra Pawn without generating a losing position, but most often the other side can give the extra Pawn back at the right time and gain equality or advantage.

In most cases, it leads to very tactical play.
