It depends on the type of game you want.
Should I learn the Dutch or Czech Benoni?

You lost to a 1025 in 18 moves, and a 1063 player in 12 moves. Quit deciding on openings, and use opening principles, and tactics...tactics...tactics...

He still has to pick an opening.

Openings are the least of his worries, but to each his own.

I just got back into chess after a few years of mainly abscence. I have a few chess books from friends for defenses against 1d4 as that was the only thing I never learned. There's a book on the Czech-Benoni and the Dutch (and the Tarrasch, but... Ugh). I'm kinda leaning toward the Dutch sense I play the French and thus could always open 1...e6. But the Czech Benoni seems interesting as well and is from the same series of books I learned the French from (How to play against '. . .').
Hi, since your main opening vs 1e2-e4 is the French, then I suggest you had better learn the Dutch. Thus, you will use ..1e7-e6 as your standard reply to d2-d4 as well and, depending on whether White chooses 2d2-d4 or 2c2-c4, you will have a French or a Dutch (with the added bonus of having avoided the Staunton gambit, which would be possible in the straightforward move order of the Dutch,i.e. 1d2-d4 f7-f5, 2 e2-e4!?).Hope I have helped you and good luck.

Does anyone ever look at the OP's games when they ask for opening advice?
Or the date of the thread? Or the last time that the OP logged into chess.com?

Or has a USCF rating of 1244...apparently all that opening study is paying off.

All the time. He still has to pick an opening though, regardless of his tactical level.

No he doesn't. He could, but he most certainly doesn't have to.

Okay, if we're going to be hyper technical then... he should.

It depends on what kind of play you're looking for. I used to play the Dutch and found the Czech Benoni horrid looking. I have friends who play the CB but I still just don't get the appeal.
Personally, I would pick the Ugh.
With some luck you might have established a new name for the Tarrasch here in this forum.
