Caro-Kann is a defence against 1 e4 and King's Indian Defence is a defence against 1 d4. 1 e4 is sharper than 1 d4, so yes a defence against 1 e4 is more compelling than a defence against 1 d4. So it makes sense to look at Caro-Kann first.

Caro-Kann is a good defence for those who like solid, positional defence. It is playable by all. King's Indian Defence is very complicated with theoretical lines that run 20 moves deep and little room for error: one suboptimal move may cause a loss. So it makes sense to look at Caro-Kann first.

you can learn both at the same time. I mean, I learned the Sicilian and the alekhine before the french and caro kann.
