Hello-

I am having trouble getting the initiative in accelerated dragon. I think I doing fine in the opening, but I have trouble going into middlegame. One of my games is above. Please help figure out my mistakes in my game.

Hi, you write about the accelerated dragon but what you are playing its not accelerated. You are missing some early opening differences with the simple dragon. I show you.

I am not an expert in the dragon but I do play the sicilian a lot and it always comes down to balancing counterplay and holding off mate. Your counterplay didn't develop fast enough and your defense wasn't optimal.

You should look the game up in a database and see where you fell behind. (I did but there is too much to copy here.)

White threw everything but the kitchen sink at you after 10 g4. You know it was a miracle you survived. If you look at a database like Chessbase Online, you will see that 10 g4 is not a main line . Very few have played it(only 22 games). White usually castles queenside (2400 games) or retreats his bishop to b3 (1200 games).   If white castle queenside and black does your move 10 .. Rc8, then the usual follow-up to 11 Bb3 is 11.. Ne5.

Perhaps that helps shows a weakness of 10 g4 (and why so few play it). The knight on e5 could attack f3.

It's not that 10 g4 was bad but perhaps you lost some time responding with 11..Na5 and 12..Nxb3.

Another alternative would be 11..Nxd4 is more usual with an immediate 12..b5 followup.

My 2 cents...Bd7 is a waste of time...you need to get in d5....you need to punch first, so e6...then d5...notice white has not castled...he is getting way too much play for this position...you need to counter in the center...don't forget the main idea in the accelerated is not to play d6 but d5 if possible...white got in a yugoslav attack....which you should easily survive in an accelerated because of the extra tempo in queen side castling...more forcing moves, not just development is in order. In other words, attack.
