Sicilian Defense

I used to play chess a lot in the 70's and my favorite is the Sicilian Defense. I stop

playing 20 some years ago and just started to plays recently. I played somebody and he told me that my defense is already absolete. Could somebody tell me what is the most modern opening and defense nowadays in chess?

Whoever said the Sicilian is obsolete is wrong, to put it mildly!  Maybe they were fans of a particular opening like the French or Pirc and they were emphasizing that they think their opening is better.  Was there a particular variation of the Sicilian they were talking about?

The Sicilian is the most active response to 1 e5.

modern? from what I've read...Taimanov or Kalashnikov Sicilians are modern?

I just study a game of yours and i also find the line you have chosen is obsolete. Sicilian has many variations and you are playing with the most out dated. This should be the reason that your opponent told that the opening is old fashioned. In live chess many players are mannerless and they always try to divert the attention of other players.

The Sicilian is a good opening, but I personally like the French Defense.  It is all a matter of style.

I would suggest out of my knowledge to go with The French Defence, Queen's Gambit or KIngs Indian Defence

Its all a matter of preference. If your oppenent was talking about a particular line in the Sicilian that you were playing was outdated, post the game here. In response to MANOJKHURANA, that diagram position is not at all outdated.

This is just what I was thinking. The position shown is one of the most common in my games where the Sicilian is played.

The position in the diagram is illegal....... the board is wrong Surprised

Good point. The entire board is sideways! I didn't even notice. Does it take a NM to figure that out?! Wink

The Sicilian is still the most popular response to 1.e4, with the Dragon being the most popular Sicilian.

The KID, followed by the QGD (including the Slav) is the most popular reponse to 1.d4.

I don't recommend any of the these responses due to their popularity. LOL - study something else to throw your opponent off balance (I personally studying the French and the Albin Counter Gambit).

Hope this helps! =)
