Is the sicillian an opener for black or white...or both?

it's a defence for black. it is when black plays 1...c5, usually in response to 1.e4. It's the most popular defence to 1.e4 so you should learn about it

As far as I know, it is played by Black in response to e4. Usually played to regain control of the centre.
