Is the sicillian an opener for black or white...or both?

it's a defence for black. it is when black plays 1...c5, usually in response to 1.e4. It's the most popular defence to 1.e4 so you should learn about it Smile

As far as I know, it is played by Black in response to e4. Usually played to regain control of the centre.
