I like the French defence for a response to 1.e4 can give a nice slow closed game or a very dynamic attack in a few variations if you want to play them.
As a response to 1.d4 I also play e6 if they play e4 then I happily go into my french defence lines if they play c4 you can play Nf6 Then go into either a nimzo-indian defence or a QGD game.

I'm finding that I play a bit better in closed positions with clear ideas and not too many complications. What are some opening lines for Black that have this trait? I've been working with the Caro-Kann lately and it seems to fit the bill, but I'm assuming there are other ways to deal with 1. e4, and I'm entirely unsure what to do for 1. d4 . . . I've been messing with the Grünfeld but that's just on a whim.
